A wedding day in Tashkent is long: getting ready in the morning, the nikoh, a walk and photo shoot, the evening celebration. All this time the bouquet is in the bride's hands, often in the sun and without water. That is why brides ask us not "which flowers to choose" but "will the bouquet last until the evening". Here is how we prepare it and what you can do.

Why a bouquet wilts

A cut flower keeps losing moisture through its petals and leaves, but it has nothing to drink. Heat, direct sun and wind speed this up many times over. So everything that extends a bouquet's life comes down to two things: give the stems water and keep the flowers cool.

What we do

• We choose hardy flowers. Carnations, lisianthus, stock and spray roses hold their shape well through the day. The bouquet in the photo is made of them, with sprigs of eucalyptus.
• We prepare the flowers in advance. Before arranging, stems are re-cut and conditioned in water so each flower stores up moisture.

What you can do

1. Keep the bouquet cool until you go out. Don't leave it in a hot car or on a windowsill. The best place is an air-conditioned room away from fruit: fruit releases ethylene, which makes flowers age faster.
2. Put the bouquet in water during breaks. If it is in an aqua box, just return it there. If it is in a bouquet holder, top up the foam by carefully pouring a little water between the flowers.
3. Keep the bouquet out of the sun. During the walk and photo shoot, hold it in the shade when you are not being photographed. Half an hour of direct Tashkent sun does more harm than several hours in a cool hall.
4. Hold the bouquet upright and don't squeeze the stems. It will keep its shape and the stems won't break.
5. Refresh the petals. A light mist from a fine sprayer brings back a fresh look. Don't let drops run onto the ribbon and decorations.

If the bouquet has wilted a little

Re-cut the stems at an angle, ideally under water, and put the bouquet in cool water in the shade for an hour. Most flowers noticeably revive. For a bouquet in a holder, just top up the foam with water and keep it somewhere cool.

After the wedding
