How to Keep a Bouquet Fresh in the Heat: 7 Rules for Tashkent Summer
How to Keep a Bouquet Fresh in the Heat: 7 Rules for Tashkent Summer
+36°C is a tough test for cut flowers. Yet even at the peak of Tashkent summer a bouquet can last a week or longer. Tips from Luna Flowers florists.
1. Into Water Right Away — Not Ice-Cold
Trim the stems and place flowers in cool (12–15°C) water. Ice-cold water shocks the stem and it stops drinking.
2. Angled Cut with a Sharp Knife
Cut stems at 45 degrees with a knife, not scissors — scissors pinch the capillaries. Refresh rose cuts every two days.
3. No Direct Sun or AC Draft
Worst spots in summer: a sunny windowsill, a table right under the AC flow, next to the stove. Best — a bright room without direct sun or drafts.
4. Fresh Water Daily
In the heat water spoils within a day. Change it daily, rinse the vase, remove leaves below the waterline.
5. Cool Nights
Florist's trick: move the bouquet to the coolest room overnight — it adds 2–3 days of life.
6. Keep Fruit Away
Ripe fruit releases ethylene, which dramatically speeds up wilting.
7. Flower Food Works
A florist's sachet, or half a teaspoon of sugar with a few drops of lemon juice per liter of water.
Heat Tolerance by Flower
Champions: chrysanthemums, lisianthus, carnations — up to two weeks. Hydrangeas love water — you can even shower their heads. Roses need fresh cuts. Peonies open fast in heat — buy them in tight bud.
