Caring for Peonies and Ranunculus: How to Help Buds Open, Not Wilt

Peonies and ranunculus are among the most popular flowers at Luna Flowers — and among the most delicate. Standard rose care won't work here.

1. Thin stems need a sharp blade only

Ranunculus stems are hollow and thin, and scissors easily crush them. Use a sharp knife or blade at an angle, or the stem will stop absorbing water.

2. A tight peony bud is normal

A firm, closed peony bud will open within 2-3 days in a warm room. For a longer-lasting bouquet, keep it somewhere cooler for a day first.

3. Check the bud before buying

A rock-hard peony bud may have been cut too early and might never open. Look for a bud that gives slightly when pressed — still closed, but softer.

4. Change the water more often than for roses

Both flowers drink heavily and cloud the water fast. Change it every other day, trimming the stems slightly each time.

5. Keep away from heat and direct sun

6. How long they last with proper care
