How to Cut Flower Stems the Right Way

How to Cut Flower Stems the Right Way

Trimming stems might seem like a small detail, but it's often what decides whether a bouquet lasts a week or just three days.

1. Why cut stems at all

During transport, an air pocket forms at the cut, blocking water intake. A fresh cut before placing flowers in a vase clears it.

2. The main mistake: scissors

Household scissors crush the stem's fibers instead of cutting them cleanly. Use a sharp knife or garden shears instead.

3. Cut at 45°, not straight across

An angled cut increases the absorption area and stops the stem from sealing flat against the vase bottom.

4. Ideally, cut underwater

If possible, trim the stem in a basin of water or under a running tap so no air reaches the fresh cut.

5. Re-cut every 1-2 days

This isn't a one-time step: trim another 1-2 cm each time you change the water, especially for roses and chrysanthemums.

6. Woody stems need an extra slit

Lilac and hydrangea stems turn woody at the base — besides an angled cut, a small vertical slit helps water travel further up.

At Luna Flowers, we cut stems correctly before every bouquet leaves us — you just need to repeat it at home. Browse the catalog.
