How to Revive a Wilting Bouquet: Emergency Flower Hacks

How to Revive a Wilting Bouquet: Emergency Flower Hacks

Even with good care, a bouquet can start wilting earlier than expected. Before throwing it away, try these quick fixes.

1. Re-cut the stems deeper

Trim 3-4 cm off each stem at a 45° angle, ideally under running water, to clear any blocked or bacteria-filled section and open a fresh path for water.

2. A cold bath for an hour

Submerge the bouquet almost fully — up to the blooms, except delicate flowers like hydrangeas — in cool water for 30-60 minutes. Florists use this trick to let flowers "drink" through their petals too.

3. A hot shock for woody stems

For lilac, chrysanthemums, or roses with thick stems, dip the tip in very hot water for 20-30 seconds, then straight into cold water. This widens the capillaries and pushes water up the stem.

4. Fresh water and double feeding

Change the water completely and add sugar plus a drop of lemon juice or vinegar — a stressed flower needs extra "food" and clean, bacteria-free water.

5. A special trick for hydrangeas

If a hydrangea is wilting, dip the flower heads themselves in water for 15-20 minutes, not just the stems — this flower "drinks" through its petals just as well.

6. When it's too late to save

If the stem feels slimy and smells unpleasant, that's decay, not just thirst — the flower can't be revived. Remove it so it doesn't affect the rest of the bouquet.

If your bouquet can't be saved, order a fresh one from Luna Flowers — we put it together the day you order.
