How to Care for Cut Roses So Your Bouquet Lasts Longer

With proper care, fresh roses usually last 7–10 days in a vase, sometimes longer. What matters most are the first hours after you get the bouquet and a few simple habits.

In short: cut 2–3 cm off the stems at an angle, remove leaves below the waterline, fill the vase with clean cool water to half the stem height, change it every 1–2 days and refresh the cut by 1 cm. Keep roses away from sun, radiators and fruit.

1. How to Cut Rose Stems

Cut 2–3 cm off each stem at a 45° angle with a sharp knife or pruner, ideally under running water so no air gets into the stem. Paper scissors crush the stem and are not suitable.

2. Should You Remove Leaves from Roses in a Vase?

Leaves in water rot quickly and bacteria clog the stems. Keep leaves only on the upper part.

3. How Much Water Roses Need in a Vase

Wash the vase and fill it with clean room-temperature or slightly cool water, so the stems are about half submerged. Use flower food if it came with the bouquet. Top up the water when the level drops: roses drink a lot in the first day.

4. How Often to Trim Roses and Change the Water

Each time, refresh the cut by 1 cm. Cloudy water is the main reason roses wilt early.

5. Choose the right spot

Keep roses away from direct sun, radiators, air conditioners and ripe fruit, which releases ethylene. In the Tashkent summer this matters even more.

6. If the bouquet came in an aqua box

You can leave it in the aqua box for the first day — just make sure there is water. After that, unwrap it, trim the stems and put the roses in a vase.

7. How to Revive a Drooping Rose in a Vase

Recut the stem, wrap the rose tightly in paper to keep the stem straight and stand it in deep cool water for 2–3 hours. Most roses recover.

8. Remove faded flowers

Take out wilted roses and darkened outer petals straight away so the bouquet stays fresh longer.

Why Roses Wilt in a Vase

Most often it is one of five reasons: air got into the stem when it was cut, the water turned cloudy and bacteria multiplied, leaves were left in the water, the bouquet stands somewhere warm or sunny, or there is fruit nearby. Another reason is that the roses were not fresh to begin with. If the heads have already drooped, try the method from “How to Revive a Drooping Rose in a Vase”.

How to Care for Spray Roses in a Vase

A spray rose stem carries several buds that open one after another. Trim the stem the same way as regular roses and cut spent blooms off at the base of the sprig — the energy goes to the remaining buds. Spray roses usually last longer than large single roses. How Long Cut Roses Last in a Vase
